The History Department and the North Carolina Honors Association are delighted to welcome Dr. Ryan Emanuel to campus to deliver the annual Preyer Lecture and the keynote address of the NCHA’s fall conference.
Water and life are inextricably intertwined for many Indigenous peoples, and Native communities of eastern North Carolina are no exception. In this talk, Dr. Ryan Emanuel will share stories of how Indigenous communities in eastern North Carolina have built and maintained cultural connections to water and watery places despite centuries of colonial oppression and environmental transformation. Drawing from his book, On the Swamp: Fighting for Indigenous Environmental Justice, Emanuel discusses some of the ways that industrial pollution, unsustainable development, and climate change create challenges and opportunities for Lumbee people and their Indigenous neighbors.
He will deliver his lecture on Friday, October 24th, at the Sandra Levine Theater in the Gambrell Center. Please join us for a short reception beforehand, beginning at 6:45 pm in the lobby; and Dr. Emanuel’s lecture at 7:30 to 8:30 pm.
